With a career spanning nearly five decades, as David Letterman said, “[Freddy Fender] is one of the greatest voices in all of music.” No matter the genre, Fender’s music brought the spirit of the borderlands he called home, to audiences around the world. His soulful performances, bilingual recordings, and enduring songs not only established him as one of the most distinctive and influential voices in American music, but also a pioneer of both Rock en Español and TexMex Country.
The South Texas born singer-songwriter’s unique rise to stardom led to three separate decades of success with timeless recordings like: “Acapulco Rock,” “Wasted Days and Wasted Nights,” “Before the Next Teardrop Falls” and “Secret Love.”
His success in music led to a career in acting with roles in films like “Short Eyes” and “She Came To The Valley,” as well as his breakthrough performance in Robert Redford’s 1987 epic “Milagro Beanfield War.”
After a brief hiatus, Freddy would return to music as a member of the legendary supergroups the Texas Tornados and Los Super 7, which led a Grammy win with each group respectively. Then in 2002 Freddy would return to Spanish music with the release, “La Musica de Baldemar Huerta.” This album married both his Spanish language career in the ’50s with his current career, leading Fender to his first and final Grammy win as a solo artist.
With inductions in the Grammy Hall of Fame, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and most recent induction in 2025, to the National Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry; Fender’s artistic impact in rock and roll, country, and Tex-Mex music continues to be preserved and celebrated.
